Automotive heating is a main component of the system's HVAC. The heater core, which is a small radiator like part, is the main component of the system. The heater uses hot engine coolant, to provide heat to the cabin. Dual climate control systems use two heater cores. A heater control valve controls the amount of coolant flowing through the heater core. The heater valve is not used in all systems. The reason, is that some manufacturers allow coolant to flow through the heater core, at all times. A blend door is used to mix cooled and heated air, to achieve a desired temperature. The heater valve could be mechanical or electrically actuated.

The heater control valve, allows the flow of coolant through the heater core to be controlled. It is turned on and off, without effecting the operation of the rest of the system.
